Description:

In 1975 the Roman lawyer Gabriele Mastrojanni decided to invest in wine production, and to do so in the area of Montalcino, then still far from being that reference point for Italian and international wine that it is are today. Gabriele Mastrojanni buys the San Pio and Loreto estates, in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, near the southernmost border of the denomination, marked by the Orcia river, and there, he begins his study of the Sangiovese grape (Sangiovese grosso, traditionally called Brunello), of the terroirs of the estate and of winemaking.
At the beginning of the 90s, two important professionals joined the Company: the agronomist and director Andrea Marchetti and the oenologist Maurizio Castelli, who contributed growing the Company to what it is today: one of the most interesting and renowned in the area. So much so, that the estate attracted the attention of the Illy family, which acquired the property in 2008 making it part of the Group, alongside other important Companies in the food sector.
The estate’s vineyards are characterized by clayey soil, rich in tuff and sandstone, to the southeast, and by soil richer in river sediments, silt and pebbles to the southwest. The altitude of 300 to 400 meters above sea level allows a good temperature range and the proximity to Mount Amiata guarantees good freshness at night and protection from atmospheric events.
San Pio is the only wine of the company produced blending Sangiovese with international grapes and it represents the most open and experimental spirit of the still young estate, that is committed on the one hand to carefully following the footsteps of tradition with its Brunello di Montalcino and “Cigliegiolo”, on the other, seeks modernity and experimentation with an open mind and with the aim, in the end, for the highest quality.
